Mylan has long been committed to serving cancer patients through a diverse oncology portfolio and working closely with advocacy groups like the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. The Mylan Morgantown Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) team has felt that commitment personally over the last few years with the two-time cancer diagnosis of employee Yaritza Tanon Ammons.
“When I think of Tanon’s journey, three words come to mind: fighter, inspiration and winner,” said Head of North America and Europe EH&S Dale Stemple.
It’s hard enough beating cancer once. Imagine being told, after several rounds of chemotherapy treatments and multiple surgeries, that you have a new, unrelated cancer.
That was Tanon’s reality for two years. But her coworkers didn’t let her think for one second that she would have to go through two rounds of cancer alone. They brought meals to her family, called her during treatments, visited her at the hospital and prepared encouraging videos for her to watch before and after surgery.
“Our EH&S team, like many other teams at Mylan, is very close, so when something happens, good or bad, it affects all of us. The entire team really jumped on board at day one,” Stemple said.
About a year of treatment later, her cancer was gone. But by November 2017, at a follow-up appointment after surgery, Tanon received the news that she had cancer again – a new cancer in another area, not related to the first cancer. She underwent almost another year of treatment and was cancer-free by the end of 2018.
“Going through cancer is one of the toughest challenges that I have had to go through in my life,” Tanon said. “I am truly amazed by all of the love and support I received since being diagnosed with cancer.”
Tanon and her coworkers have made a tradition of participating in the Mylan-sponsored Relay for Life of Monongalia County, which was held this summer in Morgantown.
“I’m so thankful that Mylan is making a difference in the lives of cancer patients and survivors like me,” Tanon said. “I’m proud to walk with the Mylan team at our local Relay for Life in support of other patients around the world.”
As ONE Mylan, we all have a role to play in serving patient communities, especially when disease hits close to home like it did for Tanon. Mylan is proud to continue advocating for patients by sponsoring Relay for Life and other awareness events around the world.
